Maintenance Turnaround for the Cheviré Ro-Ro Pontoon in Saint Nazaire
At the end of November, Nantes Cheviré’s ro-ro pontoon N° 1 set off for Saint Nazaire, towed by the dredger Le Milouin. Several teams from Nantes ‒ Saint Nazaire Port were mobilized to ensure the transfer of this pontoon between Cheviré and the Saint Nazaire docks. It entered dock N° 1 with the help of the Compagnie Fluviale de Transport (CFT) push tug Val d'Avel.
This type of maintenance turnaround takes place every 15 to 20 years. In addition to careening the pontoon (cleaning followed by spot repairs on the paintwork), the guide skids will be replaced, and various operations will be carried out on the metalwork, depending on the damage found (mooring ladders, wooden fenders, railings, etc.).
The teams are also planning to carry out repairs to the anti-corrosion system on the dolphins at Cheviré. This major maintenance programme will also serve to check that the infrastructure is working properly. The pontoon is due to return to service in mid-February 2025.
